Given recent workforce fluctuations at tech companies, it would be easy to imagine that the overall employment picture is one of doom and gloom. However, according to Eurostat, in the EU, the employment rate of those aged 20-64 was 74.8% in the second quarter of 2022, which actually increased by 0.3% compared with the first quarter of the year.
So while we have heard a lot of rumblings about layoffs at the special platform giants Meta and Twitter, for example, the other thing to keep in mind is that European and UK labour laws require collective consultation in the case of any layoff exceeding 20 workers. This helps to protect workers’ rights, and gives breathing space to staff so that they can find other employment.
January is busy for recruitment
As some tech firms are undoubtedly shedding staff, others with a stronger footing are taking the chance to mop up the best talent, and January is traditionally a busy month for recruiters too. There are several reasons why: a new year brings new hiring budgets, career changes are a very common New Years’ resolution, spurring job searches, and those who finished year-long contracts are often on the job hunt once more.
The current environment––and time of year––represents a good opportunity to test the waters and see what is available as 2023 lands.
In-demand jobs
Additionally, there are several career paths and roles within the tech sector that are experiencing growth. Cybersecurity, for example, is on the rise with a market value that is expected to grow globally to $202 billion in 2023.
Demand for cybersecurity jobs has risen significantly over the past few years. More than one million cybersecurity jobs will be available next year, but less than 400,000 cybersecurity professionals will be trained by that time––if you have existing skills, you’ll be in demand.
Other sectors in demand include data science, cloud computing jobs, artificial intelligence and machine learning as well as virtual and augmented reality.
