Although it’s smarter, extra daring, and extra artfully crafted than most, it could possibly’t be ignored that Sorcerer is, at its core, a hell of a thriller. The very premise of the film — transporting extremely unstable crates of nitroglycerin throughout greater than 200 miles of punishing jungle — should be a sign of how unnervingly and unrelentingly suspenseful it may be. Sorcerer is so intense that I couldn’t probably keep perched on my sofa, releasing a few of my nervous vitality by pacing across the room as I watched. The standout sequences of Sorcerer are set on a rope bridge that appear as if they might barely assist a 150 lb. man slowly crossing its expanse, not to mention vehicles weighing many tons and carrying such harmful cargo. The sight of one of many vehicles swinging perilously on the bridge because it sways throughout a torrential storm will be the most gruelingly intense I’ve witnessed in any movie from any period.
The Guardian says:
A fierce, austere and intriguing movie: a cinematic concerto of pessimism.
