Hi everyone,

I’m under 50 and realized I overcontributed to my 401(k) in 2025 after switching jobs early in the year.

W-2 #1

  • 401k (code D): $5,749.98
  • Roth 401k (code AA): $2,112

W-2 #2

  • 401k (code D): $17,249.94

Total contributions: $25,112
2025 limit: $23,500
Excess: $1,612

I’ve already contacted my current plan administrator (BPAS) to request a corrective distribution of the $1,612 plus earnings before April 15, 2026.

My question is about filing my 2025 taxes right now.

Since I haven’t received a corrective 1099-R yet, should I:

  1. Enter a placeholder 1099-R with code 8 for $1,612 so it’s taxed in 2025?
  2. Or wait and amend later once the real 1099-R is issued?
  3. Or just report the excess another way (“other income”)?

I’ve already entered both W-2s exactly as shown and did not adjust Box 12.
