This wasn’t an overnight decision for me.
If you’re thinking of starting your own one-person business: Don’t jump off a cliff. Build an exit ramp instead.
I was already planning my exit for about 1.5 years in my 9–5 before I pulled the trigger.
During this time, here’s what I did:
I made sure I had 2 years of living expenses saved in my bank — I saved close to 60% of my six-figure income for a number of years. I’ve driven the same $4,000 Toyota Yaris I bought in 2018. I’ve worn the same shoes and clothes since 2016.
I started to freelance and create content while I had a 9–5 job — I was writing on Medium, creating content on LinkedIn, and attracting clients while I had a 9–5. I was building independent & leveraged sources of income that could scale with time.
I built an email list of contacts I could sell my services — I subtly hinted to clients that I was leaving. I checked my contract for a non-compete clause. I nurtured key relationships and positioned myself for business opportunities.
By the time I walked out:
- I knew I could survive for two years without an income.
- I had two six-figure contracts already signed.
- An audience that I could monetize.
And the worse thing that could happen to me is I have to go get another 9–5 job or drive Uber Eats.
I took a highly calculated risk that had a wide tolerance for error. You should do the same.
