New content is proving to still be king in streaming, as Netflix (NASDAQ:NFLX) is showing in the latest numbers. The streaming leader topped ratings with three originals, bolstered by new episodes.
Five more episodes in the newest season of Netflix’s You led it to log 1.35B minutes streamed and top Nielsen’s latest weekly ratings (for the week of March 6-12). It was followed on the overall list, though, with two more Netflix originals (Outer Banks, with 1.227B minutes, and MH370: The Plane that Disappeared with 1.165B minutes) ahead of HBO Max (NASDAQ:WBD) entry The Last of Us (1.058B minutes).
And Netflix placed a new movie, Luther: The Fallen Sun at the fifth spot with 898M minutes. It also scored with replays of its live comedy special Chris Rock: Selective Outrage, which built on a short previous week to stream 798M minutes. The program became the most-watched comedy special on a streaming platform in a week in Nielsen’s records.
Rounding out the Overall top 10: No. 6, The Mandalorian (DIS), 889M minutes; No. 7, NCIS (NFLX) (NASDAQ:PARA) (PARAA), 888M minutes; No. 8, South Park (WBD), 806M minutes; No. 9, Chris Rock: Selective Outrage (NFLX), 798M minutes; and No. 10, CoComelon (NFLX), 727M minutes.
The Originals chart was also topped by Netflix’s (NFLX) You, Outer Banks and MH370: The Plane that Disappeared, though Netflix added five others to dominate that chart. The only non-Netflix titles were The Mandalorian (DIS) at No. 4 and History of the World, Part 2, which was 10th-best and streamed 409M minutes for Hulu (DIS) (NASDAQ:CMCSA).
Acquired programs were led by HBO Max’s (WBD) The Last of Us, Netflix/Paramount+ with NCIS and HBO Max’s South Park. But Disney+ (DIS) also landed Bluey at No. 5 with 705M minutes; HBO Max (WBD) saw Friends land at No. 9 with 511M minutes; and Netflix/Peacock (CMCSA) saw New Amsterdam at No. 10 with 504M minutes.
And the Movies list saw one of the better relative performances for Peacock (CMCSA) to date. Netflix led that list with its Luther movie, but it was followed directly by Turbo, shared by Netflix and Peacock and streaming 406M minutes. And Peacock had the third-best movie as well — Puss in Boots: The Last Wish streamed 383M minutes.
(Nielsen streaming ratings now incorporate viewing from eight major streamers: Amazon Prime Video (AMZN), Apple TV+ (AAPL), Disney+ (DIS), HBO Max (WBD), Hulu (DIS) (CMCSA), Netflix (NFLX), Paramount+ (PARA) (PARAA) and Peacock (CMCSA).)
